Legal Landscape is a free website that explains New Zealand law in plain language for migrants, international students and temporary workers, in six languages, and points people to free help. It provides legal information, not legal advice. The English and Chinese content has been reviewed by a person; the other four languages are machine-assisted, and the site says so. It has been running since November 2025 and reaches about 93 people per day.
It is being put on a proper footing as a charitable trust and is not yet incorporated or registered with Charities Services. A national law firm took the matter on through its pro bono programme in September 2026, and the engagement is concluded. We are looking for two trustees who are independent of the founder, and this seat is the legal one: a lawyer, a community law worker, a law academic, or someone with experience in advice or advocacy work.
The job is oversight, not free legal work. The service publishes statements about the law to people who cannot afford to check them, and at the moment, one person decides both what it says and whether that is right. This trustee is the person who can ask whether a statement is correct, whether the line between information and advice is holding, and whether the referral behaviour is sound.
Unpaid, no donation expected, roughly two meetings a year. It is also a real legal responsibility: a trustee of a charitable trust has duties under the Trusts Act 2019, and this is a role to weigh properly rather than wave through. You would join as an individual, not on behalf of any employer. Legal Landscape is an independent project: no organisation it refers to runs, endorses, or oversees it.
