Role title: Aotearoa CAN Operations Coordinator
Reporting to: Executive Director
About Aotearoa Climate Action Network
Aotearoa CAN brings together a network of collectives, organisations, whānau, iwi, hapū and movements that work across climate justice and climate action to achieve a just transition for Aotearoa that honours Te Tiriti o Waitangi; protects te taiao and wildlife; restores biodiversity; achieves zero carbon and ensures everyone’s needs are met. Members of Aotearoa CAN work at the local, regional, national and international levels and collaborate on various projects, actions, events and campaigns. We are the country node for Climate Action Network International - an international network of over 1,500 civil society organisations in 130 countries driving collective action to fight the climate crisis and advocate for climate justice.
Aotearoa CAN plays a convening, facilitator and educative role bringing different parts of the climate movement together around our core just transition principles while allowing for members to pursue different strategies and approaches to achieving their goals. We do this through regular communication, hui, zui, coordination of solidarity and shared learning. We value whakawhanaungatanga, trust, openness and power-building.
Aotearoa CAN tends to regional relationships with PICAN and CANA. We recognise the urgency of the climate crisis for the Pacific and other frontline, Black and Indigenous communities.
Our Kawa
Honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi: We know that for te taiao to be protected, Te Tiriti needs to be honoured. We work to restore kaitiakitanga and put the health and wellbeing of Papatūānuku at the heart of all of our systems and cultures. We support the devolution of decision-making, power and resources from colonial institutions to whānau, hapū and iwi for climate and land justice.
Whakawhanaungatanga: We make time to build and strengthen trusting relationships through kai, kōrero, gatherings where the whānau can come and cultural and spiritual wellbeing is tended to. We have strong practices of repair when rupture occurs. We give each other grace and generosity.
Kotahitanga: Aotearoa CAN weaves a quilt of diverse experiences and views where we uphold the mana of everyone and don’t leave anyone behind. We share our knowledge, time and resources with each other and strengthen our muscles for being in collectives and communities of care.
Solidarity: We back tangata whenua and tangata moana-led solutions and movements.
Strengths-Based: We know that hope is a discipline, radical imagination and joy is essential and that we are stronger and more abundant when we are woven together. We think seven generations ahead. We bring, and value, the unique strengths that each of us offers to this intergenerational mahi for climate justice and action. We value lived experience, climate and environmental science, Indigenous knowledges, and Mātauranga Māori.
