Secretariat | Secretariat | Kapa Tuhituhi 

  • 2x Two-year fixed term full-time positions 
  • Contribute to kaupapa that centres Māori and other priority communities within national data context 
  • Support advisory groups who will bring lived experience into Stats NZ’s mahi 
  • The preference is for the roles to be based in Wellington, but other locations will be considered

This is a chance to be part of something enduring. Stats NZ is establishing four groups to bring outside voices in, to help shape the statistical design for our new census model: 

  • Crown–Māori statistical design forum 
  • Rainbow data advisory group
  • Pacific data advisory group 
  • Homeless and transient populations data advisory group 

Each secretariat will support two of the above groups. We encourage applicants to indicate which of the groups they feel best placed to support. 

The mahi you do will directly contribute to how Aotearoa understands itself today, and for the future. 

The Crown–Māori Statistical Design Forum is already established and incorporates a kaupapa that ensures iwi and Māori voices help shape the design of our national data system. The other three groups are in the process of being established. The secretariat will assist in the establishments of these groups, and the ongoing running of them. 

This is a chance to be part of meaningful, enduring mahi, supporting advisory groups that bring the perspectives of priority communities into how Aotearoa’s data system is shaped. The mahi you do will help ensure community voices are heard and reflected in the decisions that influence how our national data is designed, used and understood and how future generations are represented in our data.

Starting salary: $73,779 - $86,798 + Kiwisaver

The role | Te tūnga 

This fixed term (2 years) full time (37.5 hours per week) role is preferably based in Wellington, but other locations will be considered.  

You will: 

  • Provide secretariat and coordination support to two Priority Community Data Advisory Groups, including scheduling hui, preparing agendas and papers, coordinating logistics, and keeping records up to date.  
  • Prepare clear meeting notes, follow up actions, and help ensure information flows effectively between members and internal teams.  
  • Support internal teams to understand and incorporate the groups’ perspectives into key programmes of work.  
  • Work alongside iwi and Māori partners, internal teams, and community representatives to support Māori data aspirations and culturally safe engagement. 

Your mahi directly supports community voices being present in spaces where national data decisions are shaped, helping build more trusted and inclusive outcomes for Aotearoa. 

This role would suit someone who has: 

  • Experience providing coordination or administrative support to hui, meetings, or working groups.  
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear documentation and meeting notes.  
  • Awareness of public sector processes and the machinery of government 
  • Experience working with Māori, iwi or hapū, or a genuine interest in building this capability.  
  • Experience or knowledge of LGBTIQ+, takatāpui, MVPFAFF+, Pacific Peoples, homeless, or transient populations, or a genuine interest in building this capability 
  • An interest in Māori data kaupapa, community voices in data or Crown–Māori partnerships.  
  • Confidence in your cultural capability, or a willingness to actively grow it, fluency in te reo Māori and mātauranga Māori knowledge are valued.
