Finance Business Partners

Job Description

  • Step beyond traditional accounting into a varied, business facing role
  • Work directly with business leaders and gain exposure at senior leadership level
  • Flexible working arrangements - three days in the office, two from home

Are you a finance professional who enjoys working with people as much as numbers? Are you naturally curious, confident asking questions and interested in understanding what really drives an organisation's performance?

New Zealand Red Cross is part of the world's largest humanitarian network, supporting vulnerable people and communities across Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally. Guided by its humanitarian principles, the organisation works to improve lives, strengthen communities and support people when they need it most.

They are seeking two Finance Business Partners to join the Financial Performance Team in Wellington. These are varied, hands-on roles offering the opportunity to work directly with different areas of the organisation, gain broad exposure to its operations and contribute to financial and operational decision-making at senior levels, while playing an important part in supporting the long-term financial sustainability of New Zealand Red Cross.

About the roles

Reporting to the Strategic Finance Manager, you'll work closely with senior leaders and operational teams across your designated portfolios, becoming a trusted source of financial insight, advice and support.

With a wide scope of responsibilities, no two days are likely to look quite the same. Your work will include:

  • Building strong working relationships with Directors, managers and operational teams
  • Supporting budgeting, forecasting and business planning across your portfolios
  • Analysing financial performance, identifying trends and providing practical advice and recommendations
  • Helping stakeholders understand the financial implications of operational decisions
  • Preparing and reviewing management reports, including financial and non-financial performance information
  • Challenging assumptions, asking questions and identifying opportunities for improvement
  • Providing financial analysis and modelling to support business cases, projects and investment decisions

About you

We're open-minded about the background you bring. You might already be working as a Finance Business Partner, be an experienced Management Accountant looking to broaden your experience, or have a financial accounting background combined with business analysis or other relevant experience.

Previous business partnering experience is not essential. What matters most is that you have sound financial expertise, strong interpersonal skills and a genuine curiosity about how organisations operate. You'll enjoy getting to know the business, understanding what sits behind the numbers and helping others make informed decisions.

We're particularly interested in hearing from people who offer:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in accounting or finance, ideally with a professional accounting qualification
  • A strong foundation in accounting, financial analysis, budgeting, forecasting or management reporting
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with the confidence to engage with people at all levels
  • Natural curiosity, an enquiring mind and a willingness to question assumptions
  • The ability to interpret financial information and communicate insights clearly to non-financial audiences
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with sound judgement and attention to detail
  • Confidence using Excel, financial systems and data to support decision-making
  • A proactive, collaborative approach and a genuine interest in understanding the wider business

Experience in the not-for-profit sector is also not essential, but an appreciation of the purpose and values of New Zealand Red Cross will be important.

Why join New Zealand Red Cross?

These positions offer an opportunity to broaden your experience, develop your commercial understanding and strengthen your advisory skills within a large, complex organisation. You'll be involved in interesting and varied work, with the satisfaction of contributing to an organisation making a meaningful difference in people's lives.

Whether you're an established Finance Business Partner or a finance professional looking to move into a more business-facing role, these could be excellent opportunities to take the next step in your career.

Benefits include:

  • Five weeks annual leave
  • Flexible/hybrid working options
  • Career development opportunities
  • Annual flu vaccinations
  • Discounts on Southern Cross health insurance
