Collective Advocacy Lead (full time, permanent)

Job Description

https://awc.org.nz/vacancies/

For over 50 years, the Auckland Women’s Centre has supported wāhine and gender-diverse communities through neighbourhood awhi (low-cost & free services; education) and nationwide voice (our collective political action). We strive to honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi and we have a proud track record of advocating for change to improve women’s lives, challenge inequity, and make our communities safer for all.

Off the back of the success of the Aotearoa Free From Stalking campaign, which helped to usher in new anti-stalking legislation, we continue to advocate for stronger protections for women and gender minorities. Our current areas of interest include keeping the government accountable with the new anti-stalking law; and our new focus of pushing for online platform regulation to reduce misogyny and gendered abuse. We are looking for the Collective Advocacy Lead to help us build the next iteration of our advocacy programme – there will be scope to expand and evolve our focus over time, responding to emerging issues and the aspirations of wāhine Māori; all women; and the communities we work alongside.

This is a full time (37.5 hours per week / negotiable) opportunity, with a salary band of $92,000 to $100,000, depending on skills and experience.

This role is designed to be in-person at our lovely Grey Lynn-based Women’s Centre – but there is space to negotiate a hybrid working style for the right person. We welcome applications from all communities, and we particularly encourage applications from Māori, and under-served groups.

The ideal applicant will have the following attributes:

  • A supportive understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its implications – proven experience supporting te Tiriti in a professional setting
  • An intersectional feminist and/or mana wahine analysis; and an understanding that trans women are women
  • Experience and proven success in working cross-culturally
  • A commitment to the Centre, its philosophy and work
  • Proven professional sector leadership experience
  • Proven government (central and/or local) engagement experience
  • Project management/ organisational skills
  • Formal or informal managerial experience: Good management skills, including problem solving, personnel management, time management, conflict resolution, ability to work with budgets.
  • Self-motivation, versatility and self-sufficiency
  • Proven oral and written communication skills, and the ability to develop long term collaborative relationships
  • Digital literacy
  • The ability to work with a small group of women and gender diverse people in a community-based agency in a non-hierarchical way
  • Demonstrated leadership and communication skills

The ideal candidate will also have professional experience in at least 3-4 of the following:

  • campaign leadership – including key messages and community tactics
  • whakatuhono – engagement with Māori organisations
  • comms or campaigning advice from a te ao Māori point of view
  • policy development/analysis
