Background:
Kaicycle is an urban farm and composting initiative based in Newtown, Te Whanganui-a-Tara, operating since 2015 - a climate justice project, working to develop a resilient food system, share knowledge and skills in regenerative Hua Parakore growing practices.
Our goal is to demonstrate how composting and urban farming can activate community spaces and localise food loops in our city. We believe reclaiming control of local food systems and creating sustainable models of working has transformational power for communities. We want to see urban farms and compost hubs in every suburb of Te Whanganui-a-Tara | Wellington!
We provide composting services to over 250 businesses and households in central Wellington, through bike-powered collection and drop-off models. All food waste is composted at our sites to make rich living compost, which is used on our urban farm, donated to other community projects and sold.

Kaicycle is a community urban farm and composting project. We are a not for profit organisation with a small team of twelve staff (mostly part-time) and many volunteers. We are on public land and have an open gate policy to visitors and volunteers. Education and research takes place in various forms on the farm too. We are in the process of becoming a verified Hua Parakore grower and this framework underpins all the mahi we do.
