Sophia, 33, wants to live.
She urgently needs a quiet home and one-on-one support for a year/two until she recovers.
We are raising funds through Givealittle to pay a Recovery Angel (with a self-contained space she can live in). The Recovery Angel role is voluntary until we raise funds above and beyond rent/board/food (which can be covered).
Her Recovery Angel would also help supervise her overall care and support needs with admin (ACC, Winz, HealthCare NZ, etc), navigating services, booking appointments, attending in-home appointments, picking up scripts, and once a week meal prep.
Sophia will recover in leaps and bounds given the right environment to work towards independence. She is determined to rebuild her life after enduring years without adequate support – but she cannot do this alone anymore.
Formerly a vibrant high-achiever and doctor, she contracted meningitis and leptospirosis simultaneously, had to fight for her life, and was later diagnosed with ME/CFS – a complex cognitive, sensory and physically disabling condition. She also has CPTSD, FND and autistic traits.
Due to profound fatigue and functional impairment, Sophia is currently bed-bound, unable to work, cook, drive or self-care.
Current physical needs:
Oversensitive to noise, vibration and light – a quiet room or outside flat in a peaceful environment
Mold-free
Diet is important but simple; ordered food needs cooking once a week
DSL daily personal cares/support and other professional services, eg, OT.
Ideal Recovery Angel:
Former health professional, but more critical to understand complex conditions, trauma-informed or with capacity to learn
Excellent communicator and emotionally attuned
Excellent organisational skills
Heart-centered, compassionate person with empowering approach
Patience – it’s frustrating not being well
Has the time to commit to walking beside her and be moral support with goals
Liaise with professionals already involved in her recovery
Ideally Waikato, but not too rural.
Sophia’s goal when she has recovered is to start up New Zealand’s first facility to accommodate and care for ME/CFS sufferers and those with complex chronic health conditions.
We have listed the job as voluntary for now, but hope to raise funds to pay a Recovery Angel over and above rent/board/food, which can already be covered.
