Summary

Ōtautahi Rainbow Spaces Collective is a community-based non-profit whose purpose is to support rainbow, takatāpui, and MVPFAFF+ communities and their whānau. We achieve this through creating affirming spaces for services across various sectors to work collaboratively, to break down barriers and foster opportunities for growth, diversity, and empowerment in Waitaha Canterbury. 

Our first priority is to open a Rainbow Hub in Ōtautahi Christchurch. The Rainbow Hub will: 1) provide a drop-in space where anyone can feel welcome to come in, get information, and connect with the community; and 2) provide a co-working space to support local and national rainbow organisations to work collaboratively in a safe and welcoming environment.

The Trust is committed, in attaining its purposes, to: upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi; creating accessible, sustainable, and inclusive spaces for programmes that support the hauora, wellbeing, and development of all members of the rainbow, takatāpui, and MVPFAFF+ communities.

We are seeking a new board member with accounting and finance skills, but encourage all interested applicants to apply. This is an unpaid, governance role that provides an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the local community by helping establish rainbow spaces, including a Rainbow Hub, in Ōtautahi Christchurch and Waitaha Canterbury. Board members will also have training and development opportunities. 

Responsibilities

As the leadership rōpū of О̄tautahi Rainbow Spaces Collective, the Board will ensure that the organisation stays aligned with our principles, purpose, and values, in all of the work that we do. The Board is responsible for

  • Setting long-term strategy 

  • Writing and reviewing organisation policies

  • Managing the organisation’s risk

  • Ensuring the organisation’s structure and capability are meeting the needs of the organisation, and adjusting as needed

  • Managing finances at a high level

  • Approving and maintaining annual plans, reports, and budgets

  • Maintaining good standing with all required registration agencies

  • Maintaining positive public relations

Each member of the Board is expected to

  • Know the organisation’s principles, purpose, and values; and understand how to implement these into strategy and policy

  • Serve as active advocates for the organisation, including by leveraging connections, knowledge, and resources that may help О̄RSC in achieving its goals

  • Act in the best interest of О̄RSC and its stakeholders, employees, and volunteers

  • Make their best effort to attend all board meetings, and be present and active during meetings

  • Keep up to date on all reports and financial statements

  • Declare any conflicts of interest

  • Maintain confidentiality about internal organisation matters

  • Abide by board resolutions

Expectations of Board Treasurer

In addition to adhering to the expectations of Individual Board Members (above), the Treasurer will also be responsible for overseeing the financial wellbeing of the organisation, including:

  • Preparing and monitoring our budget

  • Keeping financial records up to date

  • Preparing and delivering financial reports for board meetings and ensuring they are understood

  • Producing an annual financial report

  • Ensuring compliance with registration agencies, including by filing an Annual Return with the Charities Register

Ideal Candidate

We are currently looking for someone with accounting and finance skills. We are currently accepting applications from those aged 18 and up. Board experience is not necessary, and we encourage those with lived experience in rainbow, takatāpui and MVPFAFF+ communities to apply. 

Please note:

  • The Board will comprise of no less than three (3) Trustees and no more than ten (10) Trustees.  

  • The Board will comprise a supermajority of rainbow members, and:

    • One (1) position will be held by, with a minimum of two (2) positions reserved for takatāpui; priority will be given to those who whakapapa mana whenua.    

    • One (1) position will be reserved for a Pasifika member, with priority given to an individual with MVPFAFF+ identity.

    • Non-rainbow allied individuals may be permitted to join the board not exceeding one-third (⅓) of the Board, in the instance that a required position need be filled; or at the discretion of a supermajority of existing board members.

Commitment

We are looking for candidates who can commit to a minimum term of 2 years. 

As a guide, trustees contribute approximately 2–4 hours per month, including:

  • Monthly board meetings, held in central Ōtautahi

  • Participation in sub-committee meetings and projects that support the organisation’s development
