Communications and Advocacy Manager

Job Description

  • Lead communications for a trusted national organisation
  • Help rural voices be heard and influence public conversation
  • Lead a talented team and make a genuine difference for rural communities

About the role

Rural Women New Zealand (RWNZ) has been strengthening, supporting and connecting rural people and communities for 100 years. As Communications and Advocacy Manager, you'll lead the organisation's communications and advocacy function, helping ensure rural voices are heard where decisions are made.

Reporting to the Chief Executive and leading a team of two, you'll develop and deliver communications and advocacy strategies, oversee media and member communications, lead campaigns on issues affecting rural communities, and work collaboratively across the organisation to strengthen RWNZ's profile and influence.

This is a varied leadership role combining strategic thinking with hands-on delivery. You'll contribute as a member of the Leadership Team, build strong relationships with stakeholders across government and the wider rural sector, and help ensure members remain informed, engaged and connected.

While Wellington is the preferred location, RWNZ is open to considering remote working arrangements for the right person.

What we’re looking for

Strategic communications expertise is the key priority for this role. RWNZ is seeking an experienced communications professional who enjoys working in a purpose-driven, membership-based organisation and understands the unique opportunities and challenges of the not-for-profit sector. Experience in advocacy would be highly regarded, but candidates with a strong strategic communications background and an interest in advocacy are also encouraged to apply.

You will also bring:

  • Significant experience leading strategic communications across multiple channels
  • Exceptional writing, editing and verbal communication skills
  • The ability to develop compelling communications that engage a range of audiences
  • Strong stakeholder relationship management skills and the confidence to influence at all levels
  • Experience in advocacy, public affairs or government relations would be an advantage
  • Experience working within a not-for-profit, membership organisation or similarly purpose-driven environment
  • Proven people leadership experience
  • A commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and culturally responsive practice

Why join Rural Women New Zealand?

This is an opportunity to lead meaningful work that has a genuine impact on rural communities throughout Aotearoa. You'll join a collaborative Leadership Team, lead a talented communications and advocacy function, and help shape the conversations that influence the future of rural New Zealand.
