The Problem Gambling Foundation of New Zealand (PGF) is a charitable trust whose primary aim is “the prevention of problem-gambling, other personal addictions, mental health and wellbeing/hauora issues through education, health promotion and research”.
The Foundation works alongside two fully-owned subsidiaries – Asian Family Services and Problem Gambling Foundation Limited. Both are charitable companies, who undertake clinical services and advocacy. The Foundation holds the capital of the Group, currently around $5 million. The subsidiaries retain autonomy over their operational strategy, brand and service delivery.
We are seeking a Chair of the 5-person Foundation Board, sitting with two nominees each of Problem Gambling Foundation Limited and Asian Family Services.
The Foundation Board serves as the forum in which Trustees collectively consider long-term direction, drawing on the experience and insight of subsidiary Boards.
About the role
The Foundation Board, commencing in January 2026, is in its formative stage. The governance model is differentiated rather than hierarchical. The Foundation Board governs Foundation capital, shared group purpose and pan-sector collaboration. Its immediate tasks include deciding how capital will be preserved and deployed, the working relationship between the Foundation and its subsidiaries, and the strategic posture of PGF within the wider health and social policy environment.
Key responsibilities
Chair Board meetings.
Lead the Board in setting strategy and monitoring performance against charitable objectives.
Ensure effective risk management and financial stewardship.
Foster strong relationships within PGF, with stakeholders, and with external partners.
Uphold the highest standards of governance, ethics, and accountability.
About you

Business acumen and an understanding of operating models that balance mission with sustainability – especially the effective management of investments.
A strategic mindset, with the ability to anticipate opportunities and risks.
Strong leadership skills, including experience of working in partnership settings and consensus building.
Proven governance experience in not-for-profit, charitable, or commercial boards.
Deep commitment to the values and mission of the Problem Gambling Foundation of New Zealand.
Remuneration
This is a remunerated governance role, with fees set at a rate commensurate with not-for-profit board positions.
