Job Description

About the role

Ngā Hapori Ngaruru is a community-led development kaupapa from Community Think, working in partnership with Neighbours Aotearoa to deepen "participation culture" — a way of working that's less about plans and reports, and more about people, relationships, and local residents making things happen in their own neighbourhood.

We're looking for a Community 'Weaver' to help activate the community around Hamlin Park in Mount Wellington, Auckland. Weavers are paid local people who weave their community together — creating opportunities for neighbours to meet, connect and get involved. This role is all about supporting the residents who live, work and play around Hamlin Park to connect with one another, and exploring how Hamlin Park itself can become a hub for grassroots neighbourhood life.

You'll lead the Hamlin Park mahi independently — being on the ground, getting to know your neighbourhood through conversations and gatherings, and coming up with and running small-scale Common Denominator Activities (CDAs): simple, welcoming things anyone can join, like skill-share sessions, open-mic nights, neighbourhood get-togethers or sports drop-ins. The aim is connection — bringing different people together and growing a real sense of neighbourhood.

Day to day, the role involves community mapping (understanding the people, roles and relationships that make your place what it is), coordinating simple and low-barrier events/activities, building relationships with community members and mana whenua, supporting locals to bring their own ideas to life (with small amounts of funding available), and reflecting regularly with the wider Weaver team.

Who we're looking for

This role suits someone who is already rooted in and trusted by the community surrounding Hamlin Park in Mt Wellington, and who loves activating their local area. You'll be a comfortable communicator who enjoys bringing people together, with experience organising and facilitating activities, projects or events. You'll be confident working independently in a dynamic environment, while also being part of — and learning alongside — a supportive Weaver team.

What's in it for you

This is a unique opportunity to deepen your involvement in community-led development in Aotearoa, right in the place you're already connected to. You'll grow your capabilities in relationship-building and community facilitation, and you'll be supported throughout by experienced community development supervisors. Best of all, you'll be coordinating grassroots activities that are by your neighbours, for your neighbours.
