Family Support Coordinator – based in Auckland Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Job Description

Family Support Coordinator – primarily based in Auckland Hospital NICU Part-Time | 12 Hours Per Week

The Little Miracles Trust is seeking a compassionate, dedicated Family Support Coordinator to provide peer support to families with babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Auckland Hospital. This role is at the heart of what we do — walking alongside neonatal whānau during one of the most vulnerable times of their lives.

If you have experienced a NICU or SCBU journey and feel ready to support other families, this is a unique opportunity to turn your lived experience into meaningful mahi for whānau navigating one of the most challenging periods of their lives. As someone who understands the journey, you will ensure that they feel seen, supported and connected from admission through to discharge.

About the Role

As a Family Support Coordinator, you will provide in-unit, face-to-face peer support to families of premature and critically ill babies. Working as part of our wider Little Miracles Trust team, you’ll build trusted relationships with whānau and NICU staff; act as a visible and caring presence in the unit; and be a key connector - ensuring families receive the emotional support and practical resources they need throughout their journey.

This is a part-time position of 12 hours per week, based primarily at Auckland Hospital NICU.

Hours

· Tuesday: 1:00pm – 5:00pm

· Wednesday: 1:00pm – 5:00pm

· Thursday: 1:00pm – 5:00pm

While the role is based at Auckland Hospital, there will be flexibility to provide occasional cover in Middlemore Hospital NICU.

Parking costs are covered as part of the position.

Pay Rate: $28.95 per hour

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide compassionate, professional, and consistent peer support to whānau in NICU.
  • Build strong and trusting relationships with families, NICU staff, and key stakeholders.
  • Be a visible and positive ambassador for The Little Miracles Trust within the unit.
  • Identify family needs, support their wellbeing, and connect whānau with appropriate support services and resources.
  • Support the smooth running of our Auckland hub; including our retail and breastpump hire operation.
  • Support the preparation of accurate and timely reports.
  • Contribute to service development and continuous improvement initiatives.

About You

You are someone who works with empathy, emotional intelligence and quiet strength. You are comfortable working independently, but deeply value being part of a supportive, purpose-driven national team.

You probably have personal lived experience of having a baby in NICU or a Special Care Baby Unit and feel ready to use your experience to support others in a professional peer support capacity.

You will also bring:

  • Exceptional listening and communication skills.
  • Strong emotional intelligence, resilience, and sound judgement.
  • The ability to build trust and rapport with a diverse range of whānau.
  • Professionalism and healthy emotional boundaries.
  • The ability to work independently while remaining connected to a supportive team.
  • A genuine passion for supporting family wellbeing.
  • A collaborative, reliable, and proactive approach.
  • A commitment to diversity, inclusion, and whānau-centred care.
  • An eye for detail and organisation - essential for the smooth running of our Auckland hub.
