Job Description

Manawatū People’s Radio (MPR) is looking for a Kaiāwhina pāho (Content Assistant) to join our small, creative team supporting Community Access Media across the region.

This is a hands-on, development-focused role ideal for someone looking to grow their skills in media, communications, or storytelling. If you’re curious, creative, and keen to learn, we’ll support you to build practical experience across radio, podcasting, and digital platforms.

About the role

Working under the guidance of Kaituitui kaupapa pāho (Content Coordinator), you’ll support the creation and sharing of audio and visual content across MPR’s platforms. You’ll collaborate with staff and volunteer Content Creators, building your skills while helping bring diverse community voices to air.

What you’ll be doing

Content creation & production

  • Assist with recording and editing audio for broadcast and podcast
  • Help with studio setup and basic recording tasks
  • Support simple video content for social media and online use
  • Help gather content including interviews and community stories

Supporting Content Creators

  • Work alongside volunteers and content creators
  • Provide friendly, practical support during recording and production
  • Learn how to help maintain quality and broadcasting standards

Digital & platforms

  • Help update website content
  • Support social media posting and scheduling
  • Assist with uploading and organising on-demand content

Team & station support

  • Receive direction and mentorship from our Kaituitui kaupapa pāho.
  • Contribute to a collaborative and supportive team environment
  • Assist with general station activity and occasional events
  • Welcome visitors and help represent the station in the community

Reporting & relationships

This role reports to our Kaituitui kaupapa pāho, and works closely with:

  • Our Kaiwhakahaere (Station Manager)
  • Content creators and volunteers
  • Members of the public and community organisations

What we’re looking for

We’re much more interested in attitude than experience. You might be early in your career, changing direction, or building your portfolio.

  • An interest in radio, podcasting, media, or storytelling
  • Basic computer confidence and willingness to learn new tools
  • Good communication and people skills
  • A positive, reliable, and team-oriented approach
  • Curiosity and initiative

Any experience with audio, video, or social media is a bonus—but not essential.

What we offer

  • Flexible working options, potentially including some work from home
  • Laptop and mobile phone provided
  • Access to a station vehicle for work-related activities
  • A Professional Development & Wellbeing budget you can apply to
  • An environment focused on wellbeing and support
  • The chance to build real-world media skills in a community setting
