We are looking for a Kaimahi Rangatahi / Youth Development Worker to engage deeply with and support young people in our community.
This role has a strong focus on intentional one-to-one mentoring, walking closely alongside rangatahi to build trust, strengthen identity, and support them to navigate life challenges and achieve their goals. Alongside this, you will deliver youth development programmes and create pathways for connection, belonging, and growth.
Given the community we serve, strong Pasifika cultural awareness and the ability to engage meaningfully with Pasifika young people and their families is essential.
Key tasks will be to:
- Build authentic, consistent one-to-one mentoring relationships with rangatahi
- Walk alongside young people to identify their goals, strengths, and aspirations
- Support youth to develop confidence, resilience, and life skills through ongoing mentoring and coaching
- Facilitate programmes and activities that strengthen identity, belonging, and wellbeing
- Create safe, culturally responsive spaces where young people feel seen, valued, and connected
- Engage meaningfully with whānau, with particular sensitivity to Pasifika values, identity, and community dynamics
- Connect young people and families with appropriate supports, services, and opportunities
- Coordinate and support camps, projects, and other community-based initiatives
- Encourage youth participation in service, leadership, and contribution
- Maintain accurate records, reporting, and reflective practice
Mōu ake – About you
Our ideal person will:
- Hold a relevant tertiary qualification in youth development, youth ministry, or similar
- Have experience in one-to-one mentoring or coaching of young people
- Demonstrate the ability to build strong, trust-based relationships over time
- Have a deep understanding of the challenges facing rangatahi and their whānau
- Bring strong Pasifika cultural awareness, with the ability to engage respectfully and effectively with Pasifika young people, families, and communities
- Be confident using strength-based, trauma-informed, and holistic approaches

Confidence working within kaupapa Māori frameworks and values

Ability to build trusting, culturally safe relationships
- Be passionate about youth development, identity formation, and long-term transformation
- Be relational, empathetic, and highly adaptable in your approach
- Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills
You will also:
- Hold a full, clean driving licence
- Be legally entitled to work in New Zealand
- Show an understanding of and commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi
- Be willing to align with The Salvation Army’s mission, values, and Christian ethos

Hours of work
Permanent, full-time (37.5 Hours per week). Worked usually Monday-Friday, but with flexibility for events and as required.
Salary
The starting salary range for this role is $60,000 – $70,000 (depending on experience)
