Job Description

We’re looking for a Communications Specialist who cares as much as we do about reducing transport emissions and making walking, cycling and public transport more accessible for everyone.

About Crank

We deliver innovative transport projects for communities and climate. We work alongside councils and communities to help everyone move around our city easily, safely, and sustainably.

We’ve learned that each community faces a unique set of barriers to walking, cycling, and public transport, and we blend our services to meet them, drawing from our skills in project management, communication, stakeholder engagement, and activation and priming event delivery. However, we’re a small, agile team and jump in to fill resourcing or skills gaps on projects to ensure they succeed.

Crank is committed to fostering a work environment where every team member feels valued, respected, and can bring their authentic self to work every day. We celebrate our team’s unique backgrounds, cultures, and community ties. We strongly encourage candidates of all different backgrounds and identities to apply, even if your experience doesn't precisely match the job description.

About this role

This role is part of our Communications & Design team, supporting the delivery of communications across a range of client projects. This is a 32-hour-a-week (0.8FTE) role, primarily based at our office in Wynyard Quarter, with some flexibility around working hours and location (including WFH days!).

Our Communications & Design team is a team of three within Crank who work collaboratively across projects. Depending on the project and your experience, you may lead communications activity on some projects and support on others.

This could include:

  • Creating and implementing multi-channel communications campaigns promoting community-led group rides and events.
  • Developing key messages and strategic collateral for public consultation for cycleways or other infrastructure improvements.
  • Designing approaches to gather community insights and writing reports on barriers to active travel.
  • A range of other communications activities, depending on the project.

You can find the full job description here.

  • Strong writing and proofreading skills, with the ability to make complex or technical information clear and accessible.
  • Confidence working with a range of people, including taking feedback and collaborating with subject matter experts.
  • The ability to stay organised and keep things moving—managing timelines, chasing reviews and working across multiple projects.
  • Ideally, you will also have some experience with design tools (e.g. Adobe Suite, Canva) and/or experience coordinating designers and other specialists.

It would also be beneficial if you have:

  • Over 3 years of experience in a communications role.
