About the Opportunity
Are you ready to make your mark on the Māori performing arts sector?
The AKO – Pia Pilot Program is a paid internship dedicated to supporting rangatahi Māori and strengthening the future of our creative workforce. Starting 14 July 2026, this kaupapa-driven pathway is designed to bridge the gap between passion and professional reality, nurturing the next generation of cultural leadership.
We provide the practical skills and immersive experience you need to increase your employability while working within a supportive environment that celebrates Te Reo Māori me ngā Tikanga Māori.
This internship is designed to balance deep learning with high-energy industry experience, specifically integrated into the heartbeat of the Kōanga Festival.
Phase 1: 10 weeks | Part-time (24 hours per week)
Phase 2: 5 weeks | Full-time (40 hours per week) during the Kōanga Festival and industry placement.
Specialisation Streams:
Producing: Marketing, project coordination, and creative producing.
Stage Management: Logistics, artist care, and show management.
Venue & Technical: Lighting, sound design, technology, and Health & Safety.
Bonus: Technical stream interns may be eligible for an additional 4 weeks of internship via the Te Puna Venue Technician Internship.
Remuneration
This is a fully paid opportunity to ensure our rangatahi are supported while they learn:
$25.00 per hour
$600.00 per week (during the 10-week part-time phase)
$1,000.00 per week (during the 5-week full-time phase)
We are selecting six rangatahi to join this kaupapa. You don’t need a background in performing arts to apply. We are looking for potential, passion, and a desire to grow!
To be eligible, you must:
Be 18 to 26 years old and whakapapa Māori.
Be based in Tāmaki Makaurau for the duration of the program.
Be keen to explore a career in Producing, Stage Management, or Venue/Technical roles.
Be eager to learn in a kaupapa Māori setting that encourages the growth of Te Reo and Tikanga.
Have the drive to learn new skills and contribute to a vibrant creative team.
