Purpose

Auckland Pride exists to empower, celebrate, and serve Tāmaki Makaurau's Takatāpui, MVPFAFF+ and Rainbow Communities through events, creativity, and advocacy. Our work is guided by the importance of whakapapa, responding to place, and strengthening community voice. Auckland Pride delivers a city-wide festival each year alongside ongoing initiatives that champion social justice, artistic excellence, and systemic change.

The Auckland Pride Board

Board members collectively are responsible for the stewardship, sustainability, and long‑term success of Auckland Pride. Working in partnership with the Leadership Team, responsibilities include:

  • Setting strategic direction by working with the Leadership Team to establish and review Auckland Pride’s vision, priorities, and long‑term strategy.
  • Acting as ambassadors for Auckland Pride’s purpose, values, and strategic direction, maintaining open and constructive relationships with staff, artists, partners, funders, and the wider community.
  • Honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi through active partnership, collaboration, and relationship‑building with whānau, hapū, rūnanga and iwi, and Māori exercising rangatiratanga in areas where Auckland Pride operates.
  • Supporting and monitoring leadership performance and wellbeing, ensuring the Leadership Team is well‑resourced, supported, and positioned to succeed against agreed performance measures.
  • Reviewing and approving the annual business plan and budget, and monitoring organisational performance against strategic, financial, and operational targets.
  • Overseeing organisational performance, including monitoring progress against strategic and business plans and ensuring intended outcomes are being achieved.
  • Ensuring compliance and accountability, including meeting all legal, regulatory, contractual, and Health & Safety obligations.
  • Overseeing risk management, including identifying, monitoring, and mitigating strategic, financial, operational, and reputational risks.
  • Ensuring effective systems and controls are in place to support efficient operations, sound financial management, and organisational sustainability.
  • Upholding high standards of ethical governance, fostering an inclusive, values‑led culture and a strong commitment to social responsibility.
  • Applying best‑practice governance, maintaining agility and responsiveness to changes in the sector, communities, funding environment, and legislative context.
  • Participating in governance self‑review, including an annual board evaluation with a focus on values, effectiveness, and continuous improvement.
  • Supporting fundraising and partnerships, including participation in sub‑committees, strategic initiatives, and introductions to potential partners or funders where appropriate.

We seek to ensure that our board is comprised of expertise and/or lived experience in capability areas including:

  • Te ao Māori / Tikanga Māori / Te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • Moana-nui worldviews / culture
  • Financial Management expertise - we are especially keen to hear from community members with financial experience or experience as a board treasurer at this time
  • Legal expertise
  • People and Culture/Human Resources
  • Sponsorship, Fundraising, Partnership Development
  • Membership Development and Membership/ Community Management
  • Community Arts / arts networks 
  • Not for profit management and/or governance expertise
  • Any other experience that may benefit the board

While each board member will have particular strengths in one or more areas, all board members are expected to contribute widely to the effective governance and interests of the organisation.

Time Commitment & Practical Details

  • This is a voluntary (unpaid) position.
  • All board members must also be members of Auckland Pride.
  • This recruitment process is being run in advance of the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in August. We intend to co‑opt at least one board member prior to the AGM, with the option to either stand for election at the AGM or be re‑co‑opted.
  • Board members are asked to commit to a minimum term of two years.
  • The time commitment is approximately up to 8 hours per month.
  • The board meets around 12 times per year, typically in person at the Auckland Pride office on Karangahape Road, Tāmaki Makaurau.
  • Board members are expected to contribute beyond meetings by supporting key strategic initiatives where they have relevant skills and capacity.
  • Board members are also expected to attend Auckland Pride events, particularly during Pride Month in February.
