Job Description

The Newtown Community Centre / Te Whare Hapori o Ngā Puna Waiora (NCC) is looking for a people-person with experience in community development, staff, volunteer and programme management, plus comms experience, in this newly established role as the Assistant Manager / Taituarā o te Kaiwhakahaere. You would be working closely with the Kaiwhakahaere / General Manager at this buzzing, diverse community centre.

You’ll be supporting all of our community development programmes and projects, with a particular focus on the Wellington Timebank (www.wellingtontimebank.org.nz) and the Newtown Tool Library (www.newtown-tool-library.com) , as well as heading up our communications mahi – there’s a great chance to flex your writing skills and creativity here. We want our staff to develop in their roles and prioritise professional development and provide professional supervision.  

The NCC is situated in the heart of Newtown and aims to celebrate Newtown’s diversity, support each other to grow and achieve our potential and foster a community where people feel safe and a sense of belonging. Our suburb is unique, bustling, creative and community minded, with a wide variety of people from all different backgrounds. We run programmes, events and manage affordable venues across multiple buildings in Newtown, available for community members to hire to run groups, classes, events and workshops.

  • Full time 37.5 hour per week role, 9am-4.30pm Monday-Friday
  • $34.50 per hour pay rate

Want some examples of the cool stuff that be part of? We have a whole heap of exciting programmes and projects - here are some examples!

  • Arts hub! We have a new fully-fitted out theatre with lights, sound and a great projector available for the community to hire for shows, gigs, movies and fundraisers!
  • Yoga and other exercise classes: For people who love getting their downward facing dog on, but don’t love shelling out 20 bucks a time to do it! Experienced tutors lead yoga, tai chi & dance classes for the community, all for just $2 a pop.
  • Spaces for hire: We manage two hireable Newtown buildings for the community, allowing groups to meet, eat, dance, kōrero - do whatever they wanna do!
  • Sharing is Caring: We manage the Wellington Timebank (www.wellingtontimebank.org.nz- a community of people who share skills for time rather than money, letting our skills shine by helping others. DIY jobs can be done by the Newtown Tool Library (www.newtown-tool-library.com), a library for tools instead of books, reducing waste and promoting access for all!  These programmes are a particular focus for this role.
  • Getting connected: Our programme Smart Newtown has free computer and internet access, as well as free classes to get the community’s computer skills up to scratch! www.smartnewtown.org.nz
  • Wash Against Waste: For just $5, the community can borrow our beautiful, brightly coloured Wash Against Waste kits of crockery and cutlery (for up to 100 people) and chow down with a clean conscience.
  • Kai access: We host a weekly Free Soup Friday - a chance for EVERYONE to connect over some kai with other Newtown locals! The Quick Kai freezer is stocked up with healthy ready to heat and eat meals made by and for the community - just $2 per meal! We offer FREE tea and coffee complete with a comfy couch to chill out on. Our Community Fridge is well stocked with kai from local cafes, saving good kai from the bin and filling bellies!
  • Hub of Helpfulness: At Smart Newtown’s helpdesk people can get tech support with any computer or mobile phone issues. We host a Justice of the Peace service, Community Law provide free legal advice and the Citizen’s Advice Bureau operate out of our centre, dishing out help & advice!
  • Getting the word out: We put together the Newtown News, a little free monthly zine, by Newtowners, for Newtown as well as putting together a fortnightly e-newsletter with all the upcoming good stuff! This comms mahi is another particular focus for this role.
  • Off-the-cuff stuff: Random, one-off events happen here all the time – sometimes organised by us, sometimes by the community! This includes gigs, theatre productions, educational and political seminars, workshops, film screenings, art classes, dinners and lots more in between.
