Our client is seeking a Rautaki Māori Lead to join their team and champion kaupapa Māori initiatives through a Te Ao Māori lens that inspires, enables, and empowers Māori communities across Waitaha and Te Tai Poutini. You will play a crucial role in fostering strategic relationships and strengthening Māori communities and whānau through engaging in tika, pono and aroha.

This pivotal leadership role will shape how they engage with iwi, hapū, marae, and Māori communities. Through your guidance, Sport Canterbury will continue its bicultural journey to reflect Te Ao Māori values and work toward being an equitable Te Tiriti o Waitangi partner.

Ko tāu mahi - Your Role

As the Rautaki Māori Lead, you will:

• Promote Te Ao Māori across the wider Play, Active Recreation, and Sport (PARS) sector, helping create inclusive spaces that reflect mātauranga Māori and tikanga.
• Lead the design and delivery of cultural competency training to strengthen Sport Canterbury’s internal capability to ensure authentic external Māori engagement.
• Foster meaningful, sustainable relationships with mana whenua, iwi, hapū, and Māori entities across Waitaha and Te Tai Poutini, serving as a trusted advisor on cultural and strategic matters.
• Guide Sport Canterbury’s Board and senior leadership team, aligning kaupapa with Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles.
• Support Māori providers, empowering initiatives "by Māori, for Māori" and building capacity through training, guidance, and tailored frameworks.
• Represent Sport Canterbury in partnerships with iwi, marae, and Māori stakeholders to enhance engagement, trust, and outcomes for Māori communities.

Ko tāu nā i tēnei tūranga - What you’ll bring to the role

• High competency and fluency in Te Reo me ōna tikanga.
• Demonstrated experience and passionate about leadership across the sport, active recreation, play, physical activity, kaupapa Māori, educational and community sectors.
• Understands key concepts of Manaakitanga, Whanaungatanga, Kaitiakitanga, Rangatiratanga.
• The ability to establish enduring relationships with mana whenua, iwi, hapū, and Māori communities.
• Proven experience in leading, influencing and building credibility across a range of stakeholders.
• Expertise in facilitating cultural capability training and embedding Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles into strategy and practice.
• A passion for enhancing Māori outcomes and fostering kaupapa Māori initiatives.
• An ability to manage projects, on time and to agreed budgets.
• Well-honed communication (written and oral), project management, and strong organisational skills.
• A relevant tertiary qualification in a related discipline and/or equivalent experience.
