About the role

The Communications Advisor plays a key role in telling the story of Wellington Free Ambulance, helping to connect the community across Greater Wellington and Wairarapa with our mission, values, and impact. This role is responsible for developing engaging content across multiple channels — from written articles and social media to video — that showcases the vital work we do and highlights the ongoing need for support. Through compelling storytelling, the Communications Advisor will bring to life the incredible efforts of our people, helping to deepen public understanding and awareness of our service.

We’re the only emergency ambulance service for Greater Wellington and Wairarapa and proud of the place we hold in our communities, and the high-quality care that our people deliver every day.  As well as providing emergency ambulance services, Wellington Free Ambulance also provides a Patient Transfer Service that transports patients to and from scheduled healthcare appointments, a Clinical Communications Centre answering 111 calls, and Event Medical support to a huge number of community, sporting and festival events. We also teach our communities lifesaving CPR skills through The Lloyd Morrison Foundation Heartbeat Programme.

In the Wairarapa, our area goes as far north as Mt Bruce. In total, around 500,000 people call our region home. Who we are looking for

We’re looking for a proactive and experienced Communications Advisor who can create compelling content that connects with a broad and diverse audience. This is a fast-paced and varied role, ideal for someone who thrives on juggling multiple priorities while keeping sight of the bigger picture, building brand visibility and deepening community engagement. Success in this role relies on a strong understanding of the value of community support and fundraising, and a genuine commitment to fostering meaningful relationships with internal teams, supporters, and key stakeholders.

To be successful in this role, you’ll bring:

  • A minimum of five years’ experience in a similar communications role
  • Proven experience working with media and managing media relations
  • Strong event planning and coordination skills
  • A background in the not-for-profit sector
  • Proficiency with tools such as Meta, Canva, and Adobe Premiere Pro
  • Demonstrated experience managing print publications from concept through to delivery, including working with external suppliers
