Job Description

  • Shape the communications strategy of NZ’s leading animal rights charity
  • Remote working – ideally Wellington based, but other locations considered
  • Make a meaningful contribution to ending the exploitation of animals

SAFE (Save Animals From Exploitation) is New Zealand’s leading animal rights charity. They drive meaningful change for animals by challenging cruel practices, shifting public attitudes, and fostering compassion so that animals are no longer exploited or abused by humans.

This is an exciting opportunity for a communications and media professional with expertise across media relations, public relations and strategic communications, who is also deeply committed to animal rights and welfare.

This is a unique opportunity to shape SAFE’s public voice and guide communication efforts to maximise the impact of their campaigns and advocacy, while ensuring all communications align with their strategic goals and brand.

You will work closely with teams cross the organisation, including Campaigns and Fundraising, to develop and execute communications and media strategies that enhance their reach, credibility, and impact.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Producing compelling media releases, statements, and strategic content across multiple platforms.
  • Pitching stories, coordinating interviews, and supporting spokespeople to increase engagement and public awareness.
  • Managing crisis communications, identifying risks, and developing response strategies to safeguard SAFE’s reputation.
  • Developing and implementing a comprehensive communications strategic plan that aligns with the organisation’s brand goals
  • Advising on communication strategies to align campaigns and projects with SAFE’s mission.
  • Analysing media data and metrics to refine and improve SAFE’s communications approach.
  • Maintaining and organising SAFE’s media repositories for seamless access and business continuity.

This role offers the unique opportunity to align your career with your values, advocating for a world where animals are no longer exploited. If you believe in the power of communication to drive change, this is your chance to make a real impact. You will also have the opportunity to work with some of the most experienced and influential animal advocates in New Zealand.

You'll be a dynamic and media-savvy professional with a deep understanding of the political landscape and current affairs. Passionate about staying ahead of the news cycle, you thrive in a fast-paced environment where no two days are the same. (This is a remote position).

Person Profile:

  • Strong media relations expertise, with a good understanding of New Zealand’s media landscape and political environment.
  • Experience in strategic communications and public relations management
  • Experience in providing communications guidance that aligns projects and campaigns with organsational goals
  • Ability to communicate effectively with government agencies, policy makers and stakeholders
  • Skilled in building pro-active and creative communications plans and programmes across audiences, aiming for and achieving impact
  • A proactive approach in identifying opportunities to enhance SAFE’s brand and reach new audiences.
  • A commitment to SAFE’s mission and values, with an understanding of animal rights and welfare advocacy.
