Job Description

ShelterBox Director /Trustee – Campaigns, Marketing & Communications

When a cyclone hits Vanuatu, when floods displace tens of thousands in Myanmar,
when an earthquake levels a neighbourhood in Turkey — ShelterBox is there within days,
providing emergency shelter and essential supplies to families who have lost everything.
In New Zealand, it falls to a small team of volunteers to ensure that generosity flows from
this corner of the world to wherever it is needed most.

We are looking for a senior marketing and communications professional to join our Board
and help us do that work better. This is not a passive governance role. It is an active,
creative position for someone who wants to put their skills to work on something that
matters — building campaigns, shaping stories, and connecting New Zealanders to one
of the world's most compelling humanitarian missions.

Position Description

Title Director /Trustee – Campaigns, Marketing & Comms
Location                        – National.   Remote working
Remuneration               – Voluntary position
Commitment                – 2-year commitment. Monthly virtual Board meetings.  Face to face                                                   board meetings once a year
Time commitment        – Guideline 3+ hours per week

THE ROLE
The Director /Trustee – Campaigns, Marketing & Communications plays an integral role
helping us raise funds and connect New Zealanders to the work of ShelterBox around the
world, ensuring no one is without shelter following disaster or conflict.

This role carries real responsibility for a significant part of ShelterBox NZ's programme. You will work across governance and execution — contributing to strategic decisions at board level while also pulling on the oars of our campaigns, comms, and content activity.

Core skills and experience across:

 Charitable fundraising strategy (or perhaps market/business development)
 Public Relations and media engagement
 Tactical writing for campaign, releases and engagement applications
 Donor / membership / stakeholder strategy
 Social media engagement and content
 Team working
 Previous experience as a Director is advantageous but not essential.

You will pick up a series of exciting fundraising campaigns (mostly developed) and assist
in bringing them to our audience with effective launch and ongoing campaign management and stakeholder communication. In addition, we have a network of supporters interested to learn about our work around the world. This role is a vital linkage between our work and our audience.

Engagement and communication via social media, newsletters and regular comms is a core part of the role and you will have an abundance of ready-made rich and compelling content to work with and, in time, people to assist in the execution of this work.

Strategic Marketing
• Develop and own SBNZ’s annual marketing and communications strategy — setting
priorities, allocating effort across channels and audiences, and ensuring campaign
activity connects to fundraising outcomes
• Define and evolve SBNZ’s audience segmentation — identifying who we are trying
to reach, what motivates them, and how different channels serve different giving
cohorts
• Establish a light-weight measurement framework for marketing activity — setting
baselines, tracking performance, and reporting to the board on what is working
and what needs to change
• Lead the development of SBNZ’s brand voice and positioning in the New Zealand
market — ensuring consistency across all channels while allowing appropriate
flexibility for local context
• Identify and prioritise new audience opportunities — including youth
demographics, corporate partners, and communities currently outside SBNZ’s reach
• Advise the board on emerging communications trends, platform changes, and
audience shifts relevant to charitable fundraising in NZ
• Build and steward relationships with external communications partners — agencies,
media contacts, ShelterBox Australia and UK counterparts — to leverage capability
beyond what SBNZ can sustain internally

Campaigns
• Develop, iterate, maintain and improve our campaign assets and resources —
building a library of materials that volunteers and partners can use effectively
• Work with internal and external stakeholders to establish and execute marketing
and fundraising campaigns from concept through to close
• Monitor campaign performance and effectiveness — analyse results, draw
conclusions, and apply them to the next cycle
• Bring existing campaigns — several already developed and waiting for execution
— to their audiences with well-managed launches and sustained momentum

Storytelling & Content
• Develop compelling communications and stories about ShelterBox's work in the
field — drawing on an abundance of rich operational content generated by the
global organisation
• Write and edit for multiple channels and audiences: newsletters, social media, press
releases, donor communications, club presentations
• Create relevant, timely content in response to emerging disasters and deployments
— translating complex humanitarian situations into clear, human stories
• Develop audience-specific messaging that builds awareness and inspires giving
among different communities — Rotary networks, general public, youth audiences

Communications & Engagement
• Manage our newsletter and social media cadence — building from a current low
base toward a regular, engaged audience
• Develop and maintain media relationships, identify placement opportunities, and
build SBNZ's public profile
• Support the NZ Rotary District Governors' ShelterBox Ambassador Programme — a
nationally endorsed scholarship that generates significant PR and fundraising
activation potential
• Work alongside our Volunteer Programme to equip volunteers with the tools and
messages they need to represent ShelterBox effectively in their communities

Governance
• Contribute to board discussions on strategy, programme direction and
organisational priorities
• Bring a communications and marketing lens to governance decisions — ensuring
SBNZ's public positioning is considered in major decisions
• Participate in board subcommittees and working groups as relevant

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
You will be supported as you come alongside the NZ team and gain familiarity with the
resources and standards of the global ShelterBox organisation. Regular contact with the
chair and other board members is expected. You will also work with other volunteers
who are on volunteer program, a specific engagement campaign, and a program
manager. And you will be expected to undertake initial induction efforts including
researching information about ShelterBox, our resources and platforms etc. Happily, you
will learn that ShelterBox has a deep reservoir of campaign, comms and marketing
material domestically and among international teams. You are encouraged to develop
relationships with these teams to aid in the prosecution of your remit.

Expectations of all Board members include:
 Clear and open communication
 Responsive, proactive and agile approach that seeks relevance, action, impact
 Engaged, committed and delivery-focused
 Prepared for Board / working group meetings - respects the time of others.
 Keeping to commitments and associated deadlines.
 Maintaining an open mind - engage with all points of view and perspectives.
 Respectful of time and mission (clear with asks and contributions).

REMUNERATION
ShelterBox is a charitable organisation. There is no remuneration associated with this role.
And yes, this does seem like a lot. We are reasonable and realistic. The role as
described here is intended as a guideline. Our honest assessment is that conditions,
resources, people, and plans are significantly in situ. Facilitating brilliant execution will be
the lion’s share of the immediate focus.
