Job Description

Exciting environmental opportunities exist within a kaupapa Māori organisation. Both roles are based on-site at the Ngāti Manuhiri Settlement Trust (NMST) office based in Warkworth.

Ngāti Manuhiri Settlement Trust (NMST) is a post government settlement trust, PSGE Māori organisation dedicated to delivering outcomes for the iwi through governance, environmental stewardship, cultural revitalisation, and economic development. Guided by Ngāti Manuhiri tikanga, Te Tiriti o Waitangi and grounded in manaakitanga and kaitiakitanga, they work to strengthen relationships with whānau, hapū, and the wider community.

The purpose of the Ngāti Manuhiri Settlement Trust is to receive, administer, manage, protect and govern the Trust’s assets to ensure the cultural, commercial and social development of Ngāti Manuhiri for the benefit of its members.

We are seeking a dedicated Kaitiaki Moana - Marine Ranger and Kaitiaki Taiao - Environment Rangers (x2) to help monitor, protect, and restore our whenua and moana. These roles provide a unique opportunity to work directly in the field, supporting biodiversity, compliance, and cultural conservation initiatives.

Kaitiaki Moana - Marine Ranger - Reference - NM108

The Kaitiaki Moana - Marine Ranger, will carry out hands-on marine monitoring, compliance patrols, and conservation projects. This role integrates mātauranga Māori with technical marine science to safeguard marine biodiversity and uphold kaitiakitanga.

Key Responsibilities and skills/experience required:

  • Conduct marine biodiversity monitoring and habitat assessments.
  •  Support compliance patrols to ensure adherence to marine protection laws.
  • Assist with cultural inductions, wānanga, and iwi-led marine conservation projects.
  • Work collaboratively with the Department of Conservation, Fisheries Officers, and local councils.
  • Collect and analyse marine data, contributing to environmental reporting and stakeholder engagement.
  • A commercial skipper’s license or equivalent marine qualification is desirable.
  • Proficient working knowledge of MS Office suite is essential for reporting and communication tasks. 
  • A commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, knowledge of tikanga Māori and some proficiency in te reo Māori.
  • Comfortable using field equipment and technology, with a willingness to learn new tools and systems as needed. 
  • Ability to work in a hands-on, field-based environment with a high level of physical fitness.

Kaitiaki Taiao - Environment Rangers (x2) - Reference - NM109

  • The Kaitiaki Taiao - Environment Rangers, will oversee environmental monitoring, conservation projects, and resource management initiatives across Ngāti Manuhiri’s rohe whenua.
  • Key Responsibilities and skills/experience required:
  • Lead and support restoration and conservation projects on land.
  • Conduct water testing, cultural monitoring, and environmental site assessments.
  • Work with iwi, hapū, and external agencies to uphold conservation goals.
  • Engage in community events, planting days, and education initiatives.
  • Ability to work in a hands-on, field-based environment with a high level of physical fitness.
  • Respond to resource consent applications and contribute to environmental planning efforts.
  • Strong time management skills  
  • Detail-oriented and ability to work well under pressure and to deadlines.  
  • Creative, independent thinker, and should be comfortable working in a team environment as well as be able to function independently.  
  • Excellent communication skills, have a positive attitude and exercise complete confidentiality.  
  • Flexible to travel whenever there is a need, should be a self-starter with good computer and organisation skills. 
  • A commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, knowledge of tikanga Māori and some proficiency in te reo Māori.
  • Experience in land conservation, environmental planning, or policy development is advantageous.
  • Advanced working knowledge of MS Office suite, along with proficiency in project management and environmental monitoring systems (e.g., GIS or similar).
