Chief Executive

Full-Time Management

Job Description

Brook Sanctuary is a 700-hectare former Nelson water reserve enclosed by a 14.5km predator exclusion fence providing a protected environment for native flora and fauna.  There has been an active programme, strongly supported by the eight local iwi, translocating the taonga of tīeke, kākāriki, powelliphanta snails and tuatara. There are plans for kiwi and kākā to be reintroduced during 2025.

The Sanctuary also leases the associated Brook Holiday Reserve with over 115 camping sites.  With a team of 13 staff, over 350 volunteers who contribute 25,000+ hours keeping the sanctuary predator free and providing track and facility improvements and over 2000 paid up supporters, this is a significant Nelson community venture aiming to re-establish the environment prior to human occupation.

This NFP Trust is presently funded by a combination of operating income, supporter subscriptions, Nelson City Council grants, corporate sponsorship, philanthropic grants and donations from private individuals.

The Board of Trustees is seeking a Chief Executive to lead the Sanctuary – securing ongoing funding, further translocations, and continued growth in awareness and visitor numbers. The camping ground also provides an exciting opportunity for development.

Your role will be to implement the vision while maintaining the strong current iwi relationship.  You will secure funding, lead the staff and volunteers, provide day-to-day management, monitor projects, manage finances and prepare budgets, promote and market the sanctuary, report monthly to trustees, and be a determined advocate for the Sanctuary.

Our ideal candidate will have been in a leadership role with a strong environmental/conservation focus. You will have a passion for the project, be an engaged and enthusiastic communicator and public speaker and bring your considerable drive and ambition to the Sanctuary. Ideally, you will have experience in leading a NFP and understand the critical need to secure and maintain ongoing funding and build strong stakeholder relationships.
