Mataatua Sports Trust holds Charitable Trust status and is funded by Sport New Zealand to deliver He Oranga Poutama. He Oranga Poutama aims to enhance the quality of life for Māori through the medium of sport and recreation activities and leadership development. The fundamentals of He Oranga Poutama are, delivery by Māori for Māori, principally in the areas of traditional Maori activities, Waka Ama, Ki o Rahi, Mau Rakau and using the environment for whanau, hapu activities. Delivery guidelines are set via Te Whetu Rehua, a framework designed to measure and ensure Kaupapa Māori methods of delivery.
The Trust is based in Whakatane and co-locates with Sport Bay of Plenty in their Commerce Street offices. The Trust employs a Kaiwhakahaere and a part-time administration support role.
