Graduate - Intermediate Purpose Driven Accountant

Full-Time, Part-Time Accounting/Finance

Job Description

Fairground is a B Corp Certified social enterprise CA firm who believes in a world where one day, purpose-driven business is considered business-as-usual.  We’re all about mixing good business with social impact, and are hugely passionate about supporting other social enterprises, impact-led businesses, startups and NFPs with a range of advisory and tax compliance services. We have been operating in this space for over 12 years based out of Ōtautahi / Christchurch and Te Whanganui-a-Tara / Wellington.

For a small firm we pack a big punch. We understand how good it feels to have efficient systems, the ability to adapt quickly and be agile in our approach to our client’s businesses. We encourage new ideas, new technologies, and everyone to bring their own unique perspective to the team.

We believe we’re more than just your typical accounting firm.  Some of our core values and examples which help shape our kaupapa are:

Understanding

  • Team wellbeing is prioritised through a wellbeing allowance and extended leave

  • We are Mental Health First Aid trained, in order to support our clients and each other

  • Our client’s reasons for being in business are more important than just maximising profit

  • We escape the office every year for a team retreat

  • Everyone is encouraged to bring their full selves to work

  • We’re on a journey of incorporating Te Ao Māori into our workplace

Fresh Thinking

  • We’ve been utilising cloud-based systems and online tools long before it was cool!

  • We have a variety of hybrid working options

  • Always seeking out new ways to improve

  • Big focus on training and development

  • We’ve never done timesheets!

Reliability

  • It’s a fundamental value for our clients (we are accountants after all!)

  • We all have full trust and autonomy over our own workload

  • There are clear workflow processes and accountability

We are looking for a socially conscious person to join our team.  This could be an Ōtautahi-based graduate, or a junior-intermediate accountant who could be based anywhere in Aotearoa, as we have the option to work from home, the office, or a hybrid of both.  We have flexible working options for 20 - 40 hours a week. This means the number of hours and when the hours are completed can be tailored to suit the right candidate.

The Mahi - Key Responsibilities

  • Preparation of financial statements and income tax returns

  • Preparation of GST returns and AIM returns

  • Preparing cash flow reports, budgets and management reporting

  • Attending to general advisory queries from clients as they arise

  • Developing and maintaining genuine client relationships

  • Work alongside Directors with ad hoc value-added projects

  • To bring yourself and ideas into this role, and be a part of a bigger team

  • If you’re a graduate, there’s a component of business support duties in the role, while we train you in the above

In your application we’d love you to demonstrate:

  • A genuine passion for ventures that have social impact at the heart of what they do

  • Experience working in a CA public practice environment, especially with preparing annual accounts and tax returns (if you’re not a graduate)

  • Interpersonal skills for interacting with clients and the team

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with an eye for detail

  • Proactivity, being well organised and managing your time well

  • Ability to work as part of a physical team, and/or part of a wider virtual team

  • Motivated to lifelong learning and ongoing development

  • Experience and knowledge of Xero and other cloud-based tools

We strongly welcome applicants to express their authentic self through their application and encourage diversity, equity and inclusion. Accordingly we’ve actively designed our recruitment process to try and address any unconscious bias. Some examples of this include;

  • All applications are compiled independently by our practice manager

  • Names and demographic information are anonymised

  • Applicants are score-carded based on facts in the cover letter and CV

  • The scorecard is then reviewed by both Directors

Initial interviews are conducted via video call, however we welcome your input on how we might best set up an interview environment that works best for you.
