The Opportunity

An exciting opportunity exists to join the Environmental team at Tai Tokerau Wānanga NorthTec based in Whangārei to deliver on the New Zealand Diploma of Environmental Management and Bachelor of Applied Science programmes, starting in January 2025. 

We are looking for a passionate ecologist with at least five years’ experience working in this field, a passion for teaching and the motivation to encourage and support adult learners in their studies.

As a new tutor you will be joining a high performing team, and will be responsible for lectures, preparing lectures, planning, and delivering field trips and or laboratories, marking student work, supporting students, using the A+ student management system, moderation (internal and external), administration, self-assessment activity, marketing, recruiting students, attending meetings, plus any other activity relating to teaching and learning.

About You

To be successful in this role you will have experience working on native flora or fauna, and or, working in environmental management and policy. 

The specific areas of expertise we are looking for are:

Required:

  • Master’s level qualification or higher in relevant field 
  • Experienced ecologist with five or more years. 
  • Knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the importance of mātauranga Māori in environmental management. 
  • Experience working in conservation and or environmental management and policy within New Zealand
  • An adult teaching qualification or intention to work towards this.

Highly desired:

  • Knowledge of New Zealand Ecosystems
  • Botany expertise
  • Endemic invertebrate expertise
  • Freshwater ecology expertise
  • Animal behaviour, ecology, and genetics expertise
  • Geographical Information Systems (GIS) experience
  • Environmental management and or policy experience within New Zealand
  • Teaching or lecturing experience
