The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) is a not for profit, membership-based organisation leading the way in surgical performance, professionalism and patient care in Australia and New Zealand.

With service to our members at the forefront of our business, we support ongoing learning and development for our surgical workforce of more than 8,300 surgeons and 1,300 surgical trainees and Specialist International Medical Graduates.

Our Global Health Program focuses on strengthening health systems and building capacity of health workforce to improve the quality and accessibility of health, surgical treatment and post-operative care. We work across 15 countries in the Indo-Pacific Region with the support of multiple institutional and philanthropic donors.

About the role

In this key executive role, you will provide strategic leadership and oversight in driving engagement with Fellows and members, through leading member strategy, enhancing services and experience whilst creating a compelling value proposition and maintaining surgical standards.  With accountability for strategic marketing initiatives to effectively communicate our brand, the value and benefits of being associated with RACS, you will also drive advocacy efforts actively representing and promoting the interests and needs of the surgical profession to influence decision making processes and policies. 

Leading the Fellowship Experience portfolio, you will:

  • Oversee Australian states, territories and Aotearoa New Zealand member services and events, supporting activities by developing new ideas and facilitating collaboration between relevant College business areas and local offices.
  • Provide oversight and strategic direction of comprehensive marketing campaigns, promotions and events aimed at enhancing RACS’ brand, delivering exceptional member experiences through tailored programs, services, and support.
  • Oversee coordination and implementation of brand, marketing and communications across all portfolios and business areas to ensure a consistent brand and marketing approach across RACS
  • Lead advocacy efforts to influence decision-making processes and policies with the aim to create a positive impact on issues that directly affect members of the surgical profession and improve patient care outcomes and the broader community.
  • Provide oversight to the development, implementation and maintenance of professional surgical standards and policy setting for the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program.
  • Lead development and implementation of new methods and member offerings to improve engagement between the College and its members, identifying innovative approaches to create value and foster meaningful connections and participation
  • Drive internal and external collaboration to design, engage and promote the Annual Scientific Congress (ASC) and other events, working closely with cross-functional teams, stakeholder and external partners to enhance event content and experience to maximise attendance and engagement. 

The role will be offered on a three-year contract and can be located in any of our larger Australian state offices or Aotearoa New Zealand.

Skills and experience  

  • Tertiary qualifications in discipline relevant to the core work of the college (e.g., healthcare, business administration, marketing etc.).
  • Demonstrated experience and proven ability of advocacy, stakeholder engagement, and public representation at a strategic level.
  • Demonstrated experience in healthcare or professional membership services, events and engagement initiatives.
  • Proven track record in developing and implementing successful marketing and branding strategies, with a focus on digital engagement.
  • Good understanding of digital marketing platforms including email and CMS systems, and how these technologies can be leveraged for improved efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to build and maintain relationships and effectively communicate complex concepts to diverse audiences.
