Volunteer Service Abroad – Te Tūao Tāwāhi (VSA) is New Zealand’s largest and most experienced volunteering agency working within international development. VSA sends New Zealanders and people with strong connections to Aotearoa on overseas assignments to share their skills, experience, and knowledge directly with local people and communities to make real, sustainable change.

The Director will lead VSA’s People, Finance and Workplace group services to ensure VSA maintains its goal of being a strong, supportive place to work. You’ll lead a full range of organisational services, including people and culture, finance, technology, wellbeing, health and safety, privacy, security, cultural capability, risk management, property and asset management, internal communications, project management approaches, policies and procedures.

This role drives cultural capability across the VSA team and leads their activity and visible commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi in consultation with VSA’s Kaitakawaenga, Council Chair and members, external subject matter experts and thought leaders. As such, experience in this area or a genuine interest to learn is essential.

As a member of the senior leadership team, you’ll contribute to the achievement of organisational-wide strategic goals.


Person Profile:

  • Proven experience leading and managing cross-functional teams and an understanding of a range of corporate functions; there’s no need to be an expert in any particular area
  • A great people leader who has an exceptional ability to lead, coach, develop and motivate others
  • Previous experience working as part of a leadership group providing leadership to the wider organisation
  • Experience in strategic planning and execution
  • Financial acumen and ability to read and interpret financial data, budgets, financial statements and analyse financial and management reporting
  • Embodies manaakitanga and can establish trusted and productive working relationships quickly
  • Very highly developed written and verbal communication skills
  • Commitment to the principles of international development and understanding of the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, bi-culturalism and multi-culturalism
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Ability to “roll your sleeves up” as required
  • Experience working in a small organisation or the not for profit sector would be advantageous


The salary range for this role is $131,815 - $155,077 depending on skills and experience. VSA offers flexible working options as well as five weeks annual leave.
