Job Description

  • Are you motivated by serving your community, and looking to build a rewarding career in local government?
  • Are you able to interpret how global, national and regional issues impact local communities?
  • Do you want to contribute to the development of policy and strategy that helps shape a growing and vibrant district?
  • Can you collect, collate and analyse data to produce information that guides and informs decision making?

At Waimakariri District Council we promise to be professional, approachable and solutions focused. Waimakariri people are at the heart of everything we do. We serve a community of over 70,000 that continues to experience rapid growth. Offering a wide range of natural and recreational areas to explore, with vibrant town centres, a growing economy, and only being a short 20 minute commute to Christchurch, it is easy to understand why people want to be live, play and work in beautiful North Canterbury.

Based in the Strategy and Business Unit, we are seeking a Graduate Policy Analyst to work alongside a team of highly motivated professionals who strive to deliver innovative thinking in everything they do, including the development, monitoring and maintenance of a framework for strategy and policy to guide the Council's contribution to social, economic, environmental and cultural wellbeing. Key strategy, policy and bylaw development and maintenance accountabilities go with this mandate.

To succeed in this role, you will have strong analytic and critical thinking skills that allow you to interpret and provide advice on emerging global, national, regional and district trends and issues. You will understand the principles behind the development of high-quality policy responses to national policy statements, national environmental standards, and other legislative processes. You will be keen to learn, and your strong communication skills will enable you to contribute to cross-Council working groups to support the development and review of strategies, plans, bylaws and policies that exemplify best practice and consider community and stakeholder views.

We are looking for someone who is authentic, believes in continuous improvement and welcomes new learning and experiences by sharing, contributing and cooperating with their team and wider organisation colleagues.

If you would like to find out more about this role, please call Mark Maxwell, Strategy & Business Team Leader, on 0800 965 468 (0800 WMK GOV). A competitive remuneration package will be negotiated with someone who demonstrates the right attitude and is keen to grow a career in public policy and strategy. Please attached your current CV and Cover Letter when submitting your application.

The Council is an equal opportunity employer.
