About us

This is an amazing opportunity to lead a team of paid and volunteer staff who create community and food security for those experiencing urban poverty in Central Wellington. 

The Free Store has been running for over a decade in Central Wellington, redistributing over 200,000 items of surplus cafe food each year from our container on Willis Street. This has grown into a vibrant community of people who find belonging, the opportunity to show generosity to others, and experience transformation in their wellbeing and relationships. 

The Free Store is part of Re-New Communities Trust - a Christian charity - so applicants should be sympathetic to Christian values and comfortable with team moments of prayer and reflections on our values through the lens of our Christian commitments. This role is negotiable between 25-35 hours based on availability. 

Qualifications & experience

  • Previous background in community work or social work would be valuable.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Volunteer development and management skills.
  • Capability connecting across social and cultural divides, and the ability to maintain composure in high-conflict moments requiring de-escalation. 
  • Commitment to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Tasks & responsibilities

  • Support and oversight of staff and volunteer teams
  • Affirm and promote the culture and values of The Free Store: Belonging, generosity, and transformation. Developing and implementing a strategy to achieve our goals. 
  • Maintain and champion The Free Store’s ongoing commitment to Te Tiriti O Waitangi and its principles. 
  • Maintain relationships with cafes and other food suppliers. 
  • Work alongside our administrator and board treasurer to create annual budgets, maintain financial viability, and pursue funding.
  • Actively pursue and maintain partnerships with other community groups working in food security and poverty alleviation. 
  • Maintain policies and procedures that keep The Free Store a safe environment.
  • Regularly report  to the Re-New Communities Trust board.
  • Work alongside the other Re-New Communities Trust leaders to look for opportunities for partnership and shared strength.
