Job Description

Main Responsibilities in Support of the Chair as required:

  • Chair and guide the governance function of the Board, including planning, monitoring and reporting against all functions

  • Liaise regularly with the Treasurer to maintain a clear grasp of the Samaritans’ financial position, and to ensure full and timely financial transparency and information disclosure to the Board and relevant authorities

  • Oversee the development of the strategy and annual business plan

  • Receive regular progress reports of the organisation’s work and financial performance, and share these with the Board

  • Ensure compliance with the governing constitution and documents, charity law, and any other relevant legislation or regulations

  • Lead the development of a community of supporters for Samaritans Wellington at highest levels of business, government and the donor community

  • Champion our brand and reputation

  • Build an appropriate infrastructure and capability to ensure future delivery of services

  • Ensure a clear policy framework (including delegations) is in operation

  • Maintain careful oversight of any risk to the reputation and/or financial/legal standing of the organisation

  • Review and appraise the performance of the Board and the organisation's staff. Provide support coaching and mentoring as required

  • Provide leadership in operations, marketing and fundraising


About You: 

  • Prior Board or Committee experience

  • Understanding of the legal responsibilities and liabilities of a Board member

  • Experience in advocacy or fundraising highly desirable

  • Interest or passion for mental health services preferred

  • Involvement with the wider voluntary sector

  • Strategic leadership experience

  • Political nous

  • Integrity, tact and diplomacy

Time Commitment

  • Average time required per month is approximately 15 hours

  • The Board meets 1x per month

  • From time to time, the Deputy Chair should be available to attend and represent the charity at events, meetings or functions in the day and evening times
