Job Description

We're looking for an energetic and experienced community gardens coordinator to become our new kaitiaki of the community gardens, which are a part of Linwood Resource Centre. The role is part time, 25 hours per week between Monday and Thursday, including occasional Saturday's.

About us: 

Te Whare Taonga O Ngā Iwi Katoa | Linwood Resource Centre (LRC) is a non-profit community Centre. It aims to provide a welcoming, stimulating and safe environment for local people to build an inclusive community, where they can explore creativity and share skills and resources.  A key part of the Centre is the Community Garden.  The Community Garden offers allotment style gardening as well as a peaceful setting for locals to meet, volunteer and work collaboratively on creative projects/activities or to relax in a pleasant safe environment.

About the role:

Facilitate the community’s involvement in the gardens through:

  • Practical Assistance – volunteers, groups and allotment gardens
  • Education – practical workshops, garden group, working alongside people and groups
  • Marketing – Promoting community gardens and sales of plants.
  • Networking and collaborating with other organisations.

Safeguard those involved alongside staff and trustees by:

  • Maintaining health and safety standards
  • Enforcing rules/policies
  • Facilitating a harmonious climate of mutual respect.

Maintain and develop sustainable gardens through:

  • Planning and supervising garden tasks and projects
  • Use of organic principles, low maintenance designs and methods
  • Facilitate our Pasifika Community Garden group
  • Keep up to date with new and relevant garden practices
  • Organisation of the gardens
  • Helping organise garden maintenance, working bees and garden projects

About you: 

  • An experienced gardener, ideally with community gardens know-how, horticulture qualification and experience managing volunteers
  • Experience in any of the following areas is an advantage: Working with diverse groups of people, project management, willing to use a variety of horticultural methods, group work, and teaching
  • An empathetic person that's able to relate to a wide range of people with diverse needs
  • A can-do attitude, be able to cope well with change and thrive in an ever-changing environment
  • An understanding of Te Tiriti O Waitangi and how it applies to community work
  • A current driver’s licence
