  • Enjoy a progressive, high support and high autonomy hybrid work environment

About Dev Academy Aotearoa

Dev Academy has been running New Zealand’s premier developer bootcamp for over 10 years, with campuses in Tāmaki, Pōneke and online. We take pride in graduating capable students who love our programme and change their lives with careers in tech. More broadly, we are a social enterprise working for a better, kinder and more diverse tech sector. We want to see technology being developed by humans as diverse as our society. Our core values for students, teaching and organisational staff alike are centred around arohā, tika and pono or integrity, kindness and effort.

This role

We’re looking for someone to deliver the best possible Web Developer Bootcamp for students and teachers, while also helping to grow our business as a key member of our senior leadership team.

Key responsibilities

  • Deliver the best possible developer bootcamp for students. We offer a premium course that invests a lot in learners who want a career in coding. Almost all of our students join us because they know someone who loved the course. We want to keep that standard high, and keep learning how we can do ever better for our students.

  • Make this an even better place for teachers. Most of our teachers are Dev Academy graduates that loved the programme and come back to us to teach. We are a progressive organisation that minimises hierarchy, and we put deep care into every human that works here. We want to keep the things that make this a great place to teach, and keep learning how we can support the development and experience of our incredible teachers.

  • Iterate the design of our bootcamp for sustainable impact and growth. While we’ve been growing for ten years now, we still have a lot to learn about how we continue to deliver high quality tech education at ever higher volumes. As we grow, we also need to find ways to design efficiencies into our model that help us cater to ever-shifting demand across our different campuses. This includes supporting development of new programmes that are underrepresented in tech, particularly Māori, women, and people in the regions.

What we need is:

  • At least 5 years’ experience developing with web technologies (HTML, CSS and JavaScript)

  • At least 3 years’ experience managing direct reports

  • Experience and enthusiasm for teaching coding

  • Experience managing delivery of a product or service or team

  • It would be great, but not necessary, for you to have:

    • Experience hiring, managing and supporting developers or teachers

    • Experience designing, delivering or supporting formal courses or training

    • Experience working in cross-functional leadership teams

    • Experience leading leading in organisations similar to Dev Academy

You might fit the bill if you are:

  • You love teaching and learning

  • You are comfortable with both managing and doing

  • You have a strong sense of personal accountability for “making it all work”

  • You are adaptable, kind, empathetic, with deep integrity

  • You are able to embed and promote equality and diversity through your actions and words

  • Possessing a natural authority and ability to forge excellent relationships with internal and external stakeholders

  • You are into Dev Academy Aotearoa’s social mission of a better, kinder, more diverse tech sector through innovative, human, inclusive tech education

  • Interest or experience with te ao Māori, tikanga Māori, te reo Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi is very welcome

  • A NZ citizen or possess a work permit.

Other information you should know

This role is anywhere from 32 to 40 hours per week. We’re a whānau-friendly workplace and tamariki are welcome in our campuses. We have flexible wellbeing leave, 5 weeks annual leave, and a focus on wellbeing for our staff through yoga, flexible working, stand-up desks and annual away days and noho marae.

We welcome applications from people with non-traditional experience (volunteering or informal settings) and from minority backgrounds and genders. Dev Academy has a strong commitment to Te Tiriti O Waitangi and is working out how to honour and integrate its principles. If you’d like to bring along whānau to speak on your behalf we’d love to welcome you all. Indeed, if you require any accommodations from being flexible on timing due to childcare, mental health or other needs we’re very happy to work with you. We want to make it as easy as possible for you to come prepared and ready for interviews and work!

If you’re on the fence, please apply—even if you don’t tick all the boxes. We’re open to discussion on lots of fronts. We very much want the right person and are open to that looking different than our ad specifies.

We offer:

  • An opportunity to guide the next generation of developers into careers in tech.

  • A broad leadership role with lots of ways to make our programme, our business, and our impact on the community that little bit better.

  • A super-supportive work environment that is authentic, human-centric, and non-hierarchical.

In summary, we are looking for someone who would love leading our teaching team, shaping up the best possible web developer bootcamp, and steering our business as part of the Dev Academy leadership team.
