Tongariro Natural History Society (aka Project Tongariro) is a ‘living legacy’ with conservation, restoration and environmental education - being our core purpose. Project Tongariro's mission is to preserve, protect and restore the mauri of Tongariro National Park and surrounding environments within the Central North Island Plateau. Project Tongariro and the brands it represents (i.e. Greening Taupō, Kids Greening Taupō, Predator Free Taupō, and Waimarino Environmental Education Project) have a vision and goals focusing on restoring degraded environmental assets by carrying out active restoration projects at all scales ranging from planting out podocarp forest in the Tongariro World Heritage Area to increasing biodiversity in school backyards. Through effective collaboration across all levels, Project Tongariro is a key facilitator ensuring local councils, Department of Conservation, Iwi, landowners, businesses, schools, and individuals are inspired to connect with nature, advocating for, and working to strengths to achieve community-driven conservation outcomes.
